Director of Children and Youth Ministries Job Description

Position Overview

The Director of Children and Youth Ministries will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and administrating a comprehensive ministry for children and youth—spanning from infancy to high school graduation—that is consistent with the St. Peter’s mission “to love Christ, serve others, and spread the Gospel through community service and faithful worship.” The youth program will be centered on three pillars: faith, service, and fellowship

This is a full-time salaried position at $59,000 (including health and life insurance and a pension program) at approximately 40 hours a week, including Sundays and some evening hours. Reporting to the Rector and collaborating with parents, volunteers, staff, and the vestry, the Director of Children and Youth Ministries will establish a vision for children and youth of all ages to learn, serve, build community, and grow in their faith. The Director will build the infrastructure needed for a sustainable program with a coordinated curriculum for pre-school through high school. Applicants for the position should commit to serving at least a 3-year term.

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Develop and implement a youth program (EYC) for middle school and high school that meets regularly and includes opportunities for service, fellowship, and faith-building/theology.
  2. Create a framework for youth service opportunities, both church-focused and community-focused (examples might be visiting St. Peter’s shut-ins, cooking pancakes for the congregation on Shrove Tuesday, Christmas caroling in the community)
  3. Coordinate, promote, and implement special and seasonal events targeted toward children and youth (e.g., Vacation Bible School, Rally Day, Easter Egg hunt, Christmas pageant)
  4. Coordinate intentional activities for children and youth during adult-focused parish gatherings (e.g., Annual Parish Meeting, Lenten Suppers)
  5. Expand and strengthen the Sunday School experience to ensure it supports the church’s mission and meets the needs of parishioner families.  Visit classes to build relationships with children and to support the teachers.
  6. Work with the worship team as needed on the acolyte program and children’s choir.
  7. Collaborate with the broader church to find meaningful ways to connect youth to St. Peter’s.
  8. Recruit new young people and their families to St. Peter’s, both through church-related activities and programs in the community.
  9. Rally families for confirmation with the goal of building a youth confirmation class each year.
  10. Track and follow-up with all visitor and newcomer families.
  11. Develop a strategic plan for youth ministries that supports the mission of St. Peter’s.
  12. Participate in the preparation of the budget for youth ministries.
  13. Communicate news to the Rector, staff, and congregation.
  14. Recruit, train, and support volunteers, including Sunday School teachers.
  15. Partner with the nursery staff to ensure the needs of those families are met.
